We had an invite today to visit Greg’s mom’s friend Jill Cotton at 9 mile beach. Jill has a lovely house which overlooks the beach, it has amazing views. We all walked down to the beach via a small single track and on the way we stopped to see a blue penguin breeding box that Jill has set up in the undergrowth. We crawled under a few bushes to get to it and then Jill showed us the box, she opened the lid to show us the inside of the box and to our amazement there were two little blue penguins staring up at us! Well, we weren’t expecting that! They are so tiny and cute, it was a real treat for us to see them that close up. Unfortunately we couldn’t take any photos of them as it would scare them off.
After our little detour we carried on down the track to the beach and whilst I walked along with Jill and Eloise, Greg went off to collect some mussels for us to have for a snack later.
I went over to see what he was up to and was amazed to see how many mussels were clinging to the rocks, there were loads. Jill is so lucky, she could pop down there every day and pick herself some fresh mussels.
Here a couple of photos from our little trip down the beach!
Photos above showing rocks where Greg collected the mussels from and to the side, Jill and Greg looking for Jade!
The beach was really awesome, not a lot people know how to get down to it, so it’s very private. There is a lovely little waterfall and paddling area which we will revisit another time with Eloise.
Jill has offered us the use of a friends holiday home just up the road, so we are planning to head off there on the 1st April for a long weekend together.
We had a really cool time on the beach and when we got back to Jill’s house, Greg washed all the mussels and Jill steamed them for us, they were yummy! Can’t wait until 1st April so that we can bag ourselves some more mussels!
