Following our brief visit to Wanaka we were back on the road again and heading for Franz Joseph.  We’d been on the road for about an hour and a half when we came across a roadside cafe called ‘The Salmon Farm Cafe’, so we headed off there to stop for some cake and a coffee.

The portion sizes in some of the places we’ve stopped at are ridiculous.  We opted to share a piece of fruit cake because the slice was huge, even splitting it into two was too much and we both felt stuffed after eating it!!!

Here is Eloise with her small chocolate chip cookie, you can see what I mean about portion sizes!!! P2160041 (Small)

At the back of the cafe was a small Salmon Farm.  There were three round tanks wP2160040 (Small)ith different size salmon swimming around and then outside of the tank in the main pond were some really big ones.  It was hard to try and get a decent photo of them because two ducks kept messing about in the water which was scaring the fish away!

It was a gorgeous afternoon and this place was in the middle of nowhere.  Mind you, as soon as I stepped out of the car I got bitten by one of those pesky little sand flies.

Welcome back to the West Coast!

You can hardly make out the fish in this photo to the left.

There were hundreds of baby salmon all in one tank, just swimming around clockwise, wonder if they ever get bored!!

Anyway, after a short feed and water we got back in the car and headed to Franz Joseph……….
