Akaroa–Boat Trip

Posted by on 12 February 2011

We booP2120001 (Small)ked the boat trip for late afternoon so that we could get back to town to have fish and chips for dinner down at the harbour!!

The water was very calm when we boarded the boat and the sun was out so it was nice and warm.  We sat upstairs to start with, luckily it wasn’t full and so we were able to move around the boat quite freely.

The photo to the left is the boat we went on, there is seating on the top at the back and inside down below.  You could also walk all the way round the boat, which came in very handy when we were trying to spot the dolphins!

We were lucky to see several Hector’s Dolphins, they’re quite small, on average they only grow to 1.5 metres in length.  They surface really quickly, so it was hard to capture them on camera, apologies for my shabby photography!!  If only I had remembered my tripod!!P2120026 (Small)

The photo below was found on the internet to give you a better idea of what they look like.

We also saw some blue penguins, they were really cute, Eloise was so excited about them.  Again they were difficult to capture on camera because they were super fast.  world2007.1196409600.little-blue-penguin-bobbing-about

These are really poor photos unfortunately.  We saw lots of the penguins swimming together but they were bobbing around and diving underwater all the time, so it was pretty hard to keep track of them.

We also saw a seal asleep in a little cave, it was P2120067 (Small)really hard to spot, can you see it!

Greg did a better job with the video camera, so we’ll have to send some video clips over to you soon on a DVD.

Below are a few more photos from the trip.

The fish and chips were yummy by the way, they were also complimentary as it was part of the boat trip package!

I really must start that diet one of these days!!

Now, where did I put that cream cake?!Winking smile
